What is Topgolf?

Topgolf is a global sports entertainment company known for its high-tech, inclusive approach to golf. It combines the fun of driving ranges with interactive games and a lively atmosphere.

Key features include climate-controlled hitting bays, advanced ball-tracking technology, and a vibrant social scene complete with food, drinks, and music. Topgolf venues attract both avid golfers and casual visitors, making golf accessible and entertaining for everyone.

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball, a sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, was invented in the 1960s. It's played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes, on a court roughly a third the size of a tennis court.

The game is easy to learn, making it popular among all age groups. The rules are simple: players (singles or doubles) hit the ball over a net, aiming to score points by making the ball unreturnable by their opponents.

Pickleball has been one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, pickleball grew nearly 20% in recent years, attracting over 4 million players nationwide.

Its appeal spans across various demographics, particularly among older adults looking for a low-impact, social sport. This rapid growth positions pickleball perfectly for an entertainment-focused transformation.

Topgolf of Pickleball

Several companies are currently trying to become the "Topgolf of pickleball," each offering their unique take on combining sports and entertainment. Rally Pickleball, Chicken N Pickle and Smash Park.

While they all blend pickleball with a fun, social atmosphere, each brings its distinct flavor to the concept. Unlike Topgolf, which dominates the golf entertainment market, no single company has emerged as the clear leader in pickleball yet.

It’s hard to predict if one will dominate in the next decade, but it's thrilling to watch the innovation and see which concept ultimately prevails.

Rally Pickleball Logo

Rally opened its first location in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2023. The 27,000-square-foot venue features 8 indoor and outdoor courts, which are consistently booked, along with two restaurants, a coffee shop, co-working spaces, and private event areas. As Rally plans new locations in Denver, Nashville, and D.C., its founders are betting on their patent-pending gamification technology to set them apart.

Our Take

What we like about Rally is its design, innovative strategy, and menu. Their design is simple yet elegant, both on their website and in their venues. Rally has creative ideas like allowing players to choose an avatar for their games and developing interactive game modes where you can compete with players at other locations.

Their menu offers high-quality food, an extensive beer and wine selection, and excellent cocktails. We believe Rally's strategy is promising and could position them as a frontrunner in this emerging market in the coming years.

Chicken N Pickle Logo

One of the fastest-growing pickleball "eatertainment" companies, Chicken N Pickle, was founded in 2016, opening its first location in Kansas City. The initial eight venues were strategically built along the I-35 interstate highway, spanning Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. The company's expansion westward began with the opening of its Glendale, Arizona location.

This rapid growth is just the start for the pickleball entertainment chain. Chicken N Pickle aims to extend its reach beyond the Midwest, with plans to open 16 venues by mid-2025.

Executives at Chicken N Pickle openly admire Topgolf's successful blend of golf, dining, and entertainment, a model that has become a benchmark for entrepreneurs across various sports industries.

Chicken N Pickle merges a restaurant and sports bar with pickleball courts and yard games like shuffleboard, cornhole, bocce, and Jenga.

Our Take

What we like about Chicken N Pickle is their seamless integration of sport and entertainment, offering more than just pickleball. The food and drinks are also excellent.

However, we see a downside in their current lack of advanced technology, which is a key feature of Topgolf. In the future, incorporating more technology and interactive elements could elevate their offering even further.

Smash Park Logo

Smash Park opened its first location in West Des Moines, IA, in 2018. Since then, they have expanded to Roseville, MN, La Vista, NE and Westerville, OH. They have plans to open in many more locations.

Smash Park is a hub for friends, family, and co-workers to gather, connect, and create memorable experiences together.

They offer leagues, events, and various gathering spaces. Focusing on entertainment, Smash Park features not only pickleball but also activities like electronic darts, axe throwing, shuffleboard, cornhole, arcade games, and karaoke.

Our Take

Smash Park is fun and entertaining, but it's not exactly the Pickleball equivalent of Topgolf. Instead, it's more of a family-friendly venue where you can enjoy a variety of activities with friends and family.

With its unique concept and diverse entertainment options, Smash Park has carved out its own niche and seems to be doing quite well.

Conclusion

The idea of a Topgolf-style pickleball venue merges the best of sports and social entertainment, promising an exciting future for pickleball enthusiasts.

The concept of "eatertainment" is evolving, with venues like Pickle & Chill, which currently has one location, and Camp Pickle, set to open its first venue in 2025. In the coming years, the eatertainment model will likely advance, requiring venues to offer even more to attract customers and capture market share.

The future looks promising for pickleball, and it's exciting to see which concepts will thrive in this dynamic landscape.

By combining advanced technology, a vibrant social atmosphere, and a love for pickleball, such venues could redefine recreational sports. As pickleball's popularity soars, now is the perfect time to explore and invest in this innovative concept.
